The rich Star Wars universe has been brought to the PC ( and almost every console out there ) multiple times. Most of these games suffered from poor game design and were only sold because they got a glimpse of the hype from the original movies. The first one was an Atari game titled “The empire strikes Back” back in 1982, I loved this one. Mainly because I was a fan of the movies and I could get involved in the story for the first time myself. After this title numerous games were released, but the next interesting one was X-Wing, a Multiplayer “dogfight” game.

A game that really achieved to bring the Star Wars world to life, was “Knights of the Old Republic
”. A Role-playing game that was set thousands of years before Episode 1. It had a wonderful story, great graphics and for the first time I felt inside the Star Wars world. Things even got better when “Star Wars Galaxies” was released in 2003. The only MMORPG title based on the movies. Star Wars Galaxies is still quite popular, and the developers are constantly working to improve many aspects of the game. Some players claim it’s one of the best MMO’s out there, but in my opinion it aged to much in both game-mechanics and graphics.

The next game that will be published, by Lucas Arts, is Star Wars: The Force Unleashed. This time you start on the Dark Side, as a student of Darth Vader himself. The game is announced for the Xbox, Wii and PlayStation 3. If it will come to the PC is unknown. They will implement some interesting features, like DMM ( Digital Molecular Matter ) that will make it possible to interact with the environment naturally. You should be able to use “The force” on in-game objects, transforming them with your power. And the idea of using the Wii controllers as a lightsaber sounds neat as well. There’s no release date known yet, but it seems like an interesting addition to the already immense list of Star Wars computer games.
