Although the Hype is over, or at least settled down a bit, Second life is still an immensely popular game worldwide. Maybe the word “game” shouldn’t be used for this virtual hybrid, created by Linden labs. It’s not really a game, its an environment that imitates modern society and gives you a change to have a new social environment besides your real one. You can even make some money with it, the first millionaire is spotted already.
Second life is mainly used as a way to socially interact with other people, chatting, dancing or a more kinky challenge, like virtual sex. Although sex is not used in any of the promotions by Linden labs, it’s surely the part of Second Life that gets the most public attention. And I’m quite sure it’s also one of the main factors why people return to their virtual life very often.
The option to have sex in an anonymous world gives people the opportunity to do things they wouldn’t think of exploring in the real world. I guess it was just a matter of time until people would start pushing the edges of whats acceptable. Virtual prostitution, pedophilia and bestiality are just a few sexual escapades people feast upon. You could say, well it’s better they do it virtually then for real. But the latest scientific reports agree on the fact that people that explore these things virtually, are more driven to give it a go in the real world as well.
Because Second life is based on user crated content, there’s hardly any control by Linden labs. The only thing that seems to be successful preventing this excessive behavior is the social aspect of the game, the same reason why it started to begin with. Second life is in many aspects an intriguing social experiment, but be careful, keep you kids out of it, and report the creepy ones who can’t control themselves.
