“Remember, remember, the 5th of November”
Guy Fawkes would probably have found London’s fate in Hellgate a suitable revenge for his torturous death (which would have took place if he didn’t jumped of the scaffold breaking his neck and thus avoided being hang, draw and quartered).
Hellgate has been available since the first of November and has so far received less than stellar reviews. Which is a shame since it’s a very nice, but not quite ready, game. Most reviewers use the repetitive random generated levels, the lack of partying and plethora of bugs as a reason to give mediocre scores. However, one point they they all agree upon is that the combat is fantastic and based on the class one plays it differs profoundly. The game is all about poking Hell’s creature’s eyes through the back if their skulls in all kind of satisfying ways, using your minions as a Summoner, an over sized cannon as Marksman or some electric clone of Excalibur when playing as a Templar. Everything but the combat is fluff and bemoaning Hellgate’s lack of polish in its secondary features is like criticizing a Lamborghini for not having a child seat.
Hellgate is a very casual players friendly game. It’s addictive but not to the point it becomes compulsive. The motivation to keep playing is due to the perfect combat and not the need to grind some more for a better sword with +0.5% crit chance. Multiplayer is rudimentary so that social pressure from your imaginary friends will never be an issue. There are guilds but don’t expect much of them since Hellgate is actually a single players game with some co-op in it.
Flagship, the developer, offers a subscription service for Hellgate. It is not necessary to subscribe to play the game online but a subscription gives you access to more character slots, more stash for your loot and extra content. The verdict if it’s worth its money is not out, yet.
