EVE online received many of the Readers Choice Awards in the MMORPG.com competition. EVE won in the “most improved game” category, was voted the “best Sci-Fi online game” and was labeled the “best overall game of 2007”. Not bad for a game that’s out there for such a long time.
EVE is a space combat & trading MMO where you control and build your own spaceship, harvest recourses and interact with other players. In this game the spaceship is your avatar, and pimping it up to a distinctive machine is your ultimate goal ( besides killing other players, or get involved in game politics that take place in corporations ). All players play on the same server, something thats unique for the genre and really puts “massive” back in massive multiplayer online games. This year the graphical engine was updated in the EVE Online: Trinity expansion.
EVE is often considered a hardcore mmo, meaning it’s not easy to get into, in both game mechanics and community. When you first fire up your game client you will be overwhelmed by the amount of options and dialog screens. The tutorial guides you trough the first part and explains the basic game mechanics. But it’s so much you need to know to get things going, you’ll need the help files and ingame “Noobchannel” quite often.
After the first few hours of gameplay you only get a glimpse of whats out there, there’s really a huge world ( space ) to explore and there are many things to get involved in. The first time I ran across an intergalactic fight ( by accident … ) I was really impressed by it’s scale and the cheer beauty of the graphics. But I also noticed quite fast, this game is not my thing. Why? It takes so much dedication, planning and time to get something going, I just get bored before I accomplished anything. That doesn’t mean it’s a bad game, many gamers play this game and love it. It’s just not a game for everyone and the learning curve is steep. The good thing is you can play 14 days for free, so giving EVE online a try is easy. From my experience and from what I hear from others, you’ll know in a few hours if this game is something for you, or not.
