Rockstar just released their new title “Bully Scholarship edition” for the Wii and Xbox 360. The game is a sequel of the original, simple labeled as Bully. You play the role of a teenager trying to survive on campus, although “survival” in Bully can mean acting like an arshole yourself.
Bully Scholarship edition is getting quite some media attention these days. Usually it’s not about the gameplay itself, but about the negative effect this game might have on kids playing the game. An international coalition of teachers is worried teenagers might copy Bully’s behavior, or provide the kids with new ideas to terrorize their fellow students. I’m usually against censorship & banning games ( I’m dutch after all ) but Bully crosses the line, why?
When you compare Bully with an other edgy game, GTA San Andreas. The main difference is the environment & ingame perspective. While it’s not your everyday routine to be a gangster, shooting and beating up other gangsters, or hookers. Being in school, facing those every conflicts on campus, dealing with real “bullies” and teachers is. It’s a teenagers natural environment. Bringing violence and abusive behavior this close to the real world, makes me worried.
Rodney walker, a spokesman for Bully publisher Rockstar said:
“Okay, we know this is an entertainment experience. Video games are not just for children. This game happens to be about high school and it’s a tough kid in a tough environment”
Yes, Rodney you are right, computer games are not just for children. But this game is so clearly intended for teenagers & kids ( in both subject & graphics ) only kids will play the game. You know this, just as much as I do. Don’t hide behind your game rating, thank you.
I will end my rant here, hopefully parents will prevent their teenagers & kids playing this game. After all it’s their responsibility.
