Bishojo games are interactive erotic novels, where the story branches out into different endings depending the player’s decisions. The origin of Bishojo is in the early 80’s in Japan, and can be considered typical Japanese adult fiction. Bishojo means literally “beautiful young girl” and it’s seen in almost all genres of Anime and Manga, but it’s often used as a brand name for dating sims, like the one we review here “The Sagara Family”.
It was my first encounter with the genre, and I didn’t really know what to expect. An adult game Manga style? Or more a dating sim, “The Sims 2” in a Japanese setting? Well, obviously I was wrong. When the game client fired up. I was presented with pictures, and a story in text. Most of the artwork is static, although there are some animations here and there. At first I thought, maybe it’s just the introduction of the game, and the game will eventually start after the first few screens, but it didn’t. After some reading ( I know, I should have informed myself better upfront ) I knew this is what these games are all about. You emerge yourself into the story not by playing it, but by reading and watching the graphics. The choices you can make, just by clicking one of the three options, gives the storyline a new direction, thats all. Bishojo games aren’t “games” at all, they are interactive erotic comic books.
So, I started up the client again, adjusted my expectations, and gave the concept a fresh look. In “The Sagara Family” you are Yusuke, a young lad about to enter college in Tokyo. Your going to stay with the Sagara family during your study, and lucky you! The Sagara family is a “women only” household, four beautiful daughters and a horny widowed mother. Plenty of opportunities to get involved with these lovely ladies, and of course your more then willing to serve them all. The story develops from here, and it’s pretty good. The conversations are interesting, the options ( your choices in the story ) are really giving the whole plot a new direction. The “novel” part of “The Sagara family” can be considered more then decent, not that it’s literature. But it’s fun & sexy. The graphics are mostly static drawings, the typical Hentai / Anime imagery.
Personally I think that games like the “The Sagara Family” are quite narrow niche games. They feel like an extension of the Hentai / Anime comic books & movies. Resulting in a game & novel hybrid, that can be fun if you really like the genre.
The Sagara family is translated and published, outside Japan, by G-Collections.
