The National Institute of Media and Family and its partners have released a portion of their findings from a study of 60 U.S. retailers, showing that 46% of minors who attempted to purchase an M-rated game were successful doing so. When I look at the situation here in Europe. I'm pretty sure children could buy games of all ratings, including mature.
Most games are free available at toy stores, book stores etc.. Most employees don't know much about the games they sell, and rating? Whats that... I'm not prude, heck no.. But I was really shocked to see games like Leisure Suit Larry Uncut, manhunt, doom etc.. side by side to “have fun with Bambi” and “Dora's great adventures”. I know it IS the parents responsibility to watch over the things their kids buy, but even the covers are harsh enough to give them a nightmare...
Games with a mature/adult rating ( I would even say most teen rated games ) shouldn't be in toy stores at all. It's still part of the idea fix “computer games are for kids”. Wake up! These days games are for all ages, and the most active buying crowd are gamers from their 20 and up.
